Grimké was the "illegitimate" nephew of famed abolitionists and suffragists Sarah and Angelina Grimké, but was born into slavery. Freed at the age of five in accordance with the will of his deceased father, he ran away at 10 when his older, White half-brother tried to re-enslave him. He was forced to serve as a valet to various Confederate officers during the Civil War. After the war he attended Lincoln University where he graduated valedictorian in 1870, attended law school there and at Howard, and eventually received his Doctor of Divinity degree from Princeton Theological Seminary. He wrote and spoke extensively on racial matters. This four-volume set is an uncommon wartime publication and has consistently been one of Woodson's scarcest works.
