Limited edition of 500 numbered copies of which numbers 51 to 500 were for sale. Printed wrappers, small 4to, 20 cm, xii, 86 pp. A very detailed and informative catalogue of a splendid exhibition which celebrated the 30th anniversary of the publication of Carter & Pollard's classic unmasking of Thomas James Wise as a forger. Car…ter contributes a short foreword and Alderman Pariser, from whose collection the majority of the exhibits were drawn, provides a short introduction. The numerous exhibits cover all aspects of Wise's activities: his bibliographies and catalogues; the forgeries themselves; Wise's private printings; the exposure by Carter & Pollard; and "Wiseiana" including material on Wise's establishment, marketing and defence of the forgeries; Wise as a Bookseller, as a Benefactor; and other relevant exhibition catalogues. The catalogue concludes with an index to the Wise correspondence - some 700 items - in Sir Maurice Pariser's remarkable collection.Catalogue entries are detailed and frequently annotated. Carter notes in his introduction that many of the items in the exhibition had belonged to friends or associates of Wise, including Harry Buxton Forman, Herbert Gorfin, Edmund Gosse, and Walter Brindley Slater, 'perhaps Wise's oldest and closest friend'. Wrappers slightly faded at edges, otherwise Good.
