Cloth. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. Book Club. Readers Union (bookclub) edition in very good dustjacket with mild darkening at margins. Not price clipped. Original British price 30s lower corner of front flap. Umber cloth with gold lettering. Red top stain. Sound binding, pulled some at head of spine still tight at bottom. Intact overall. With excellent, simple illustrations of Joyce Cary's own doing. There is an original Readers Union invoice, 'April 1965 choice', folded and laid in. This memoir of the what was called by those few who remembered, 'The First Balkan War', 1912-13. According to Walter Allen, from the vantage of 1960, 'For most of us, later, larger and more devastating wars, in one of which Cary was to' also 'fight and be wounded, have practically obliterated any knowledge we may once have had of the First Balkan War -- or, for that matter, of the Secon, which followed it within a few months.' This account by the novelist, Joyce Cary goes a short way (169 pages) toward reminding some of us about this war, which has since been followed by at least one other bloody conflict, the 1990s Balkan Wars, some would call it. Memories continue to confuse all this madness amongst so much horror the 20th century (and so the 21st) willingly dispenses.

Some slight edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, corners very slightly rubbed, not price clipped (30s), no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg+ copy for its age. 170pp. Joyce Cary was born in 1888 into an old Anglo Irish family and educated at Clifton. He studied art, first in Edinburgh and then in Paris , before going up to Trinity College, Oxford, in 1909 to read law. On coming down he served as a Red Cross orderly in the Balkan War of 1912-13,the inspiration for 'Memoir of the Bobotes' (published posthumously in the UK in 1964), before joining the Nigerian Political Service. He served in the Nigeria Regiment during the First World War, was wounded while fighting in the Cameroons, and returned to civil duty in Nigeria in 1917 as a district officer. His time in Africa provided the inspiration for his first four novels. Though he settled in Oxford as a full time writer in 1920, it was not until 1932 that his first book was published. At the time of his death in 1957, he was recognised as one of the leading novelists in the world.

It later became a monthly magazine titled 'The New Crusade' and was edited by Wood-Allen alone with her daughter as assistant editor. Later, this became 'The American Mother' and then 'American Motherhood' and continued publication until 1919. Wood-Allen published the magazine herself with the assistance of her son and daughter. Sir Arthur Charles Clarke CBE FRAS (16 December 1917 - 19 March 2008) was a British science fiction writer, science writer and futurist, inventor, undersea explorer, and television series host. He co-wrote the screenplay for the 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey, one of the most influential films of all time. Clarke was a science writer, an avid popularizer of space travel and a futurist of a distinguished ability. He wrote over a dozen books and many essays. In 1961, he received the Kalinga Prize, a UNESCO award for popularizing science. Clarke's science and science fiction writings earned him the moniker "Prophet of the Space Age". His science fiction writings in particular earned him a number of Hugo and Nebula awards, which along with a large readership made him one of the towering figures of the genre. For many years Clarke, Robert Heinlein and Isaac Asimov were known as the "Big Three" of science fiction. Clarke was a lifelong proponent of space travel. In 1934, while still a teenager, he joined the British Interplanetary Society. In 1945, he proposed a satellite communication system using geostationary orbits. He was the chairman of the British Interplanetary Society from 1946-1947 and again in 1951-1953. Clarke augmented his popularity in the 1980s, as the host of television shows such as Arthur C. Clarke's Mysterious World. 2001: A Space Odyssey is a 1968 epic science fiction film produced and directed by Stanley Kubrick. The screenplay was written by Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke, and was inspired by Clarke's short story "The Sentinel" and other short stories by Clarke. A novelization of the film released after the film's premiere was in part written concurrently with the screenplay. The film, which follows a voyage to Jupiter with the sentient computer HAL after the discovery of a featureless alien monolith affecting human evolution, deals with themes of existentialism, human evolution, technology, artificial intelligence, and the possibility of extraterrestrial life. The film is noted for its scientifically accurate depiction of space flight, pioneering special effects, and ambiguous imagery. Sound and dialogue are used sparingly and often in place of traditional cinematic and narrative techniques. The film garnered a cult following and became the second highest-grossing film of 1968 in North America after Funny Girl. It was nominated for four Academy Awards and Kubrick won for his direction of the visual effects. 2001: A Space Odyssey is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential films ever made. In 1991, it was deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" by the United States Library of Congress and selected for preservation in the National Film Registry. Presumed First Edition, First printing thus.
