She was the first woman in the United States to fill that office without having succeeded her husband. Before becoming Governor, she had represented Connecticut as a member of Parliament (1953-1957) and as Secretary of State (1958-1970). Furthermore, from 1970 to 1974 she represented her district in the United States Congress. In 1976 and 1980, her name was mentioned as a possible candidate for Vice President of the United States. President Carter offered her the nomination as Ambassador to Italy but Ella declined in favor of a second term in office as Governor of her State. More than twenty years since her premature death, Ella is still much loved in Connecticut and remembered through-out all of the United States. This book, filled with photographs, documents and interviews, tells Ella's story for the first time in Italy, beginning with those places her parents left, during the early nineteen hundreds, and their emigration. Ella's father, Giacomo Tambussi (1887-1971), left the hamlet of Perleto at Carezzano, in the province of Alessandria, in 1904. Her mother, Maria Oliva (1892-1972), emigrated from Medassino, a small village near Voghera, in 1906. Marcella Serpa lives in Asti. She has collaborated with the newspaper "La Stampa" and worked in the area of cultural exchange. Co-founder of the cultural association "Comunica", whose projects include this book, her duties include research, communication, creation and organization of events. She is the co-author of the book "Inventario dopo la plena. 1994-2004: died anni dopo I'alluvione del Tanaro" (Inventory after the inundation. 1994-2004: ten years after the Tanaro flooded) published by Impressioni Grafiche in 2004.
