Bound in contemporary vellum with calligraphed title on spine. 19th century manuscript notes in Spanish on flyleaves. Binding a little loose, otherwise a pleasant, unsophisticated copy. Closed tear to foot of Tt2 due to awkward binding, with no loss of text. Rare sole edition of this monument of data tabulation: a voluminous catalogue of historical events, strictly delineated between "good, or celebratory" and "bad, or mournful", and organized according to which day of the week they fell on. A provincial cleric with too much time on his hands, Castrucci's approach is nonetheless worthy of further study: quite aside from his sources, and why he chose to tabulate his data in this fashion, he does present a certain even-handedness in his embrace of global centers of power. Tuesday's happy events, for example, are recorded under equally substantial headings for each of the European royal houses; each of the Italian city-states and their families; the Swiss Republics; England, Russia; the Ottoman Empire; Turkey; Persia; and lastly, "the Moors of Africa, as well as Spain". Also of note are a handful of references to America and Asia: for example, page 55 gives a thorough account of Columbus's fateful Sunday activities in 1492, while page 541 recounts Gregory XIII's reception of the Japanese ambassador on a Thursday in 1585. For Castrucci, the calendar date is of absolutely no importance and is not recorded in most cases; instead, he invites his reader to draw expansive parallels between eg. all of the Thursdays in history.
