La prima parte del volume è dedicata alla storia della Gemäldegalerie, attraverso le biografie di collezionisti e di mecenati e mette poi in luce la straordinaria importanza rappresentata dal nucleo della pittura veneziana del museo. La presenza di un vasto numero di dipinti veneziani nella Galleria di Berlino si deve soprattutto a due figure: il collezionista e commerciante inglese Edward Solly che nel 1821 vendette la sua ricca collezione di dipinti al re Federico Guglielmo III, e l'industriale e collezionista berlinese James Simon che nel 1904, in occasione del suo lascito al museo, consegnò una serie di importanti quadri di artisti veneziani.
