Après des études de peinture à Paris, elle s'installe en Suisse. Ce séjour au bord du lac Léman (1896-1907) marque l'apogée de sa carrière artistique et littéraire Sa découverte du village de Savièse en Valais, au décor pittoresque et à la lumière exceptionnelle, va libérer chez Burnat-Provins une formidable énergie créatrice. Elle y trouve sa principale source d'inspiration, exaltant la nature et les scènes de la vie rurale, qu'elle traduit dans l'esthétique de l'Art nouveau. Elle participe également au renonveau des arts décoratifs. De la Première Guerre mondiale à la fin de sa vie, Burnat-Provins est victime d'hallucinations chroniques, qui prennent la forme de personnages ou d'oiseaux. Ces visions donnent naissance à quelque trois mille dessins étranges qu'elle baptise Ma Ville, dont Jean Dubuftet confiera un ensemble à la Collection de l'Art Brut, à Lausanne. A travers un choix de peintures, de dessins, d'affiches et de livres, cet ouvrage nous fait découvrir l'ouvre énigmatique et onirique d'une artiste visionnaire.
