Trade Paperback. Condizione: New. In Boyle Heights, gateway to East Los Angeles, sits the 1889 landmark 'Hotel Mariachi,' where musicians have lived and gathered on the adjacent plaza for more than half a century. This book is a photographic and ethnographic study of the mariachis, Mariachi Plaza de Los Angeles, and the neighborhood. The newly restored brick hotel embodies a triumphant struggle of preservation against all odds, and its origins open a portal into the Mexican pueblo's centuries-old multiethnic past. Miguel Gandert's compelling black-and-white images document the hotel and the vibrant mariachi community of the 'Garibaldi Plaza of Los Angeles.' The history of Hotel Mariachi is personal to Catherine Lopez Kurland, a descendant of the entrepreneur who built it, and whose family's Californio roots will fascinate anyone interested in early Los Angeles or Mexican American history. Enrique Lamadrid explores mariachi music, poetry, and fiestas, and the part Los Angeles played in their development, delving into the origins of the music and offering a deep account of mariachi poetics. Hotel Mariachi is a unique lens through which to view the history and culture of Mexicano California, and provides touching insights into the challenging lives of mariachi musicians. 'Catherine L. Kurland brings together the contributors of this fabulous photo documentary to help bring attention to the Boyle Hotel, nicknamed the Mariachi Hotel, one of the iconic historical landmarks in Los Angeles that received historic landmark protection in 2007'--.…

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Good. 1st Edition. Includes 9 essays on Knox's work in addition to the Introduction by Stephen A. Martin as well as numerous illustrations, some in color. The book has sound hinges and does not lean. Pages are clean without toning, creases, marks, stains or wrinkles. There is a single 1/4" whitish spot on the book's front cover, otherwise the black cloth covers are clean and the gilt lettering on the spine is clean and bright. The upper left corner of the back cover is just slightly blunted at the tip; other cover corners are not bumped. There are a few tiny dents in the top and bottom edges of the book's covers. The book's dust jacket is not soiled but does show a lot of rubbing and light scratches. There is some wear to the jacket's top and bottom edges, but no holes, chips or tears. We will put a clear archival sleeve on the dust jacket to keep it looking good. (Note: Photos may show a flash reflection.) PayPal always welcome. We pack all our books with care and ship in cardboard boxes. Shipment outside of the United States may require extra funds for this large, heavy volume. Additional photos emailed upon request. …
