Outre le fait qu'il disait aussi être Napoléon, cet interné exprimait ainsi, en une brillante image, les affres d'une personne qui sent sa raison lui échappe…r. Une toupie sur la tête : des pensées qui, tel un manège, tournent et tournent en rond, à en donner le vertige ; une toupie sur la tête : évoluer en funambule, l'équilibre précaire et l'impression que tout risque de basculer au moindre faux pas ; une toupie sur la tête : le sentiment qu'inlassablement une vrille cherche à nous percer le crâne. Et quoi de mieux d'ailleurs que les paroles des principaux intéressés pour exprimer ce qu'ils ressentaient face à leur trouble mental et à leur internement, surtout que cette situation les mettait au ban de la société d'alors, loin de chez eux, loin de leurs repères et de ceux qu'ils aimaient. C'est à partir de l'analyse du discours des femmes et des hommes internés à Saint-Jean-de-Dieu ainsi que de celui de leurs proches qu'André Cellard et Marie-Claude Thifault cherchent à mieux dénouer le réel de l'imaginaire asilaire. Leur itinéraire est bien de présenter les multiples visages qu'empruntait la folie, au tournant du siècle dernier, entre les murs du célèbre asile. C'est cet album de photos qu'ils nous livrent en mettant l'accent sur les sentiments, les angoisses, les peines, les délires, mais aussi les espoirs de ceux et celles que l'on aliénait, en si grand nombre, à Saint-Jean-de-Dieu.».
