Sicilia no es un país cualquiera, es la tierra misma del mito, donde de cualquier semilla caída brota una fábula. «¿Para quién un viaje a Sicilia no ha representado un premio, o casi el cumplimiento de una promesa?», se pregunta Brandi. Ni siquiera en época histórica ha cesado el ser humano de fabular sobre esta isla, donde lo antiguo resurge de la tierra, convirtiendo cualquier presencia humana en extraña. A pesar de sus heridas de guerra y de las ofensas de la mala construcción reciente, en ningún lugar como en Palermo, ni siquiera en Venecia, los mosaicos tendrán mayor fulgor, y en ningún lugar, ni siquiera en Marrakech, resplandecerá la arquitectura árabe como en la Zisa o en la Capilla Palatina.
