Aggiungi al carrelloHard Cover. Condizione: Near Fine. First Edition. Hard cover 8vo (19cm ht.) in blue cloth stamped with three bands of rule in blind centering a vignette of an ornate handbell in gilt to center front board, with design mirrored in blind to the rear board and the spine decorated with a filigree pattern of gilt with title inset. All edges gilt. Cream end papers, tissue-guarded engraved title page by J.A. Foster with bell hanging from tree inscribed with motto: "Proclaim Liberty for All." This is a representation of the actual Liberty Tree, an elm near Boston Common which was a rallying point for patriots from the time of colonial protest against British taxation, and punitively destroyed by British soldiers in 1775. It has been called " a beloved symbol of hope and resistance throughout the colonies and in Boston." CONDITION: Near Fine antiquarian condition. Hinges and joints are in order, one bumped front corner, otherwise minimal wear to covers and tips, one very small area of rubbing at foot of spine. A few light colored spots of discoloration to top board, two penciled notes to front end papers. Binding firm but lightly cocked. Light foxing to engraved illustrated title page and following letterpress title page but rest of volume is clean and bright. **"The Liberty Bell"anthology of anti-slavery writings was produced by the "Friends of Freedom," a collaborative effort of Boston's Maria Weston Chapman (1806-1885) and other members of the Boston Female Anti-Slavery Society and their supporters and for sale at their fund-raising bazaar. Member contributors included Anne Warren Weston, Henrietta Sargent, Maria Lowell, and English supporters of the cause, economist and novelist, Harriet Martineau and poet Emma Michell. Male antipathy to the Boston Female Anti-Slavery Society and its members (mobbed by 5,000 "gentlemen of property and standing" in a Boston meeting of 1835) gives another layer of the complicated dynamics of the abolition movement in Massachusetts at this time. The book represents a variety of viewpoints in the twenty nine items of poetry, essays and letters. Some come from the pen of more quasi-militant opponents of slavery, including members of the Boston Vigilance Committee, including Rev. Theodore Parker, Wendell Phillips, and Henry I. Bowditch, father of contributor William I. Bowditch. The "Secret Six" militants are represented by the words of Thomas Wentworth Higginson, (also once a Newburyport Unitarian minister and literary mentor of a young Emily Dickinson,) and William Lloyd Garrison of "The Liberator." David Lee Child, sugar-beet entrepreneur, abolitionist and husband of Lydia Maria Child, (who edited the National Anti-Slavery Standard in the 1840's and also supported the family with her fiction,) is another contributor. ** The impact of the recent prosecution of escaped slave Thomas Sims in Boston under the Fugitive Slave Act is worth exploring in these essays and poems. Thomas Sims of Savannah, Georgia sailed north and was arrested in April, 1851. When brought to trial in Boston, the Superior Courthouse was mobbed and famously shackled--supposedly to prevent his supporters from breaking him out. He was sent back to Georgia in a stinging set-back for the abolitionists. Sophia L. Little's poem, The Autograph of Sims" directly addresses his plight in this volume. International abolitionists contributing to this issue included British economist, novelist and activist, Harriet Martineau, the Swedish ambassador Baron de Stael- Holstein (his wife was active in anti-slavery circles), showing how Boston's abolition movement reflected progressive European concerns about the social injustices done by "old world despots." REFS: Sabin 40942, Vol.X (1868) for 1839 issue, and "continued." Shaw and Shoemaker (1839) 56830 for 1839-1858 lists 6 vols., inclusive. 10 unique editions of "The Liberty Bell" are seen in Hathi archives in the years between 1839 and 1853, not including this one for 1852; Scarce.
