Édition française, traduite de l'Édition suédoise, d'un des plus célèbre traité d'architecture naval produit au XVIIIe siècle. Exemplaire truffé de 80 pages de notes et schémas additifs manuscrits en anglais. Au XVIIIe siècle, l'architecture navale est l'équivalant de ce que sera au XXe l'industrie aéronautique et spatiale. Cependant, en 1750 elle demeure un art empirique reposant sur les connaissances et l'il de quelques maîtres charpentiers exceptionnels : la plupart des navires militaires et marchands sont construits sans plan précis, d'après de simples esquisses et maquettes d'arsenaux. L'ouvrage du français Duhamel Du Monceau « Eléments de l'Architecture navale. », publié en 1752, est ainsi une véritable révolution. Il aborde pour la première fois la construction navale de manière scientifique et accessible à tous. Dès lors, les chantiers civils et militaires adoptent un travail rationnel s'appuyant sur les sciences physiques et mathématiques et des plans parfaitement établis. Le présent ouvrage du Suédois Frédéric Henry de Chapman, (1721-1808) parait pour la première fois en 1775. Traduit dans plusieurs langues, il ne connaitra qu'une édition en en anglais publiée en 1820 (Smith, Cambridge). La présente édition française est due à Sébastien Vial de Clairbois, (1733-1816), ingénieur naval et un historien de la Marine, qui y ajoute ses propres notes. Ce traité est l'uvre d'un marin qui connaît parfaitement la construction des vaisseaux. Frédéric Chapman est né à Göteborg, le grand port suédois de la mer du Nord. A l'âge de 15 ans, il part pour Stockholm afin d'y apprendre l'art de la construction navale. Il ouvre avec un associé un chantier naval à Göteborg dès 1744. Cela ne l'empêche pas de voyager beaucoup et même d'être brièvement arrêté en 1741, alors qu'il visite sans autorisation un chantier anglais. En 1750, il suit les cours de mathématiques de l'anglais Thomas Simpson (1710-1761). Il va ainsi utiliser la méthode de Simpson (calcul numérique d'une intégrale) pour déterminer de façon mathématique les différentes caractéristiques d'un navire (volumes, surfaces, centre de gravité). En 1757, il est engagé par les chantiers royaux suédois. Il en prend la direction sur ordre du roi Gustave III (1771-1792) qui l'anoblit en 1772. Il est alors chargé de relever la flotte suédoise tombée quelque peu en décrépitude. Il construira au total 24 vaisseaux de ligne. Nommé au grade de vice amiral en 1791, il cesse son activité en 1793, alors âgé de 72 ans. L'ouvrage se divise en IX chapitres traitant de chaque aspect de la construction : déplacement, stabilité, centre de gravité, résistance, voiles, proportions des bâtiments et des gréements et pratique de la construction. Il est illustré de 8 tableaux hors texte dont 2 dépliants et de 11 planches hors texte dont 3 dépliantes de schémas de navires en coupe. Exemplaire ayant été utilisé par un chantier de construction britannique : il est truffé d'une quarantaine de feuillets manuscrits à l'encre d'additions et notes, schémas, tableaux de calcul ainsi que d'annotations dans les marges, le tout rédigé en anglais. Ainsi, alors qu'une édition anglaise était disponible à partir de 1820, des architectes britanniques ont continué à utiliser le présent exemplaire et l'ont complété par de larges ajouts manuscrits. Provenance : James Ronalds, London (ex-libris manuscrit) et « Institution of Naval Architects, Scott Library Collection, 1930 (étiquette imprimée). 1 vol. 4to. 20 fold. Plates + 40 ff.
