Hardcover. Condizione: Good. 1st Edition. First Edition. Original publisher's orange-brown paper-covered boards with gilt lettering on front cover. 5 1/2" x 8." Twenty-six pages, complete. Pages are clean and intact overall but have a dampstain on a front flyleaf, small surface tear on front free endpaper, a former owner's small purple ink stamp on title page ("Library of Rev. Wm. Grant Fritz, Minneapolis, Minn."), and slight bumping to bottom corners of fore-edges. Covers are clean and intact overall but have moderate wear to corners and edges, slight chipping and cracking at head and tail of spine, surface chipping at spine and corners, several small marks and smudges, and slight darkening. A Good, almost Very Good copy. A series of concise sketches about author Thomas S. Chard's travels from Chicago to California. Chard initially departs Chicago by train but uses other modes of transportation and travels by foot and stage during other parts of his journey. Chard writes many detailed descriptions about people he sees and interacts with and scenery he observes. He describes his fondness for his hometown of Chicago yet describes the train as finally escaping the "interminable spider's web" that is the city. Of Portland, he notes how during "a part of the year the lower stories of the buildings whose rears abut upon the river are occupied by water and fish, rent free. Then the water and fish depart for a season under Nature's writ of ejectment, and the business men scour out their basements and store them with goods. Mammon and Neptune, as joint occupants, thus get along peaceably enough ." He describes the beauty of Mt. Shasta and then crossing the Oregon-California border. Chard then focuses on San Francisco. He approves of the city's markets, saying they "are the finest we have seen." Chard highlights some notable points of interest in San Francisco such as the Presidio and Cliff House. A part of Chard's San Francisco narrative has a pointedly xenophobic view of Chinese people as he describes Chinatown and its residents with contempt. Continuing his journey, Chard describes Monterey and Hotel del Monte and its hedge "Labyrinth." Chard says he enjoyed traveling on Seventeen-Mile Drive in Monterey and viewing its famous cypresses. The following are other places and subjects he references: Santa Cruz (which he says is "built upon a plan that would delight a goat"), Mt. Hamilton and Lick Observatory, Yosemite, Mirror Lake, California's redwoods, Los Angeles, Coronado Beach Hotel, San Diego, Riverside, Southern California's orange orchards, his return trip northward, and a visit to the "Geysers" in California. Chard's narrative concludes with his departure from California back to the east.
