An archive of early promotional materials introducing the band and promoting their upcoming first album "Some Friendly" to the US market, 1989-1990. The archive includes: - A cardboard placard for a record store CD box display for their first album, "Some Friendly," with BMG Music, Beggars Banquet, and RCA logos along the bottom graphic. - A black and white 8 x 10 inch photograph of the band, here under the name Charlatans UK, with Beggars Banquet and RCA logos in the bottom margin. - An "October '89" press release on Steve Harrison Management letterhead, announcing the new band lineup. A six page introductory biography of the band promoting the upcoming US release of "Some Friendly." - Over 50 pages of Xerographically reproduced material including graphics, announcements, articles, reviews, music charts, and concert announcements, likely distributed to the US market in September 1990 by Charlatans manager Steve Harrison. The "October '89" press release from Steve Harrison announced the addition of guitarist John Baker and singer Tim Burgess, who had replaced singer and guitarist Baz Ketley, who had left an early incarnation of the band in the late summer of 1989, and notes the band being "another product from the Transworld Consortium," an early incarnation of Harrison's management agency, which appears to have only been briefly used for The Charlatans in 1989-90. The six page biography, undated, was written after the release of their first two singles, "Indian Rope" and "The Only One I Know" (both released in early 1990), to introduce the band to the US market and in promotion of the upcoming October 1990 "Some Friendly" release, and includes a Xerographically reproduced copy of the first page of a New Musical Express article "Charlatans Aesthetic," dated September 15, 1990. The Xerographically reproduced material in the archive includes: A full page press release announcing the release of their first single, the independently released "Indian Rope" in January 1990. Proposed label art for the "Indian Rope" single and their record label Dead Dead Good Records. A full page graphic for The Charlatans from Transworld Consortium. An image of "The Charlatans / Smash Hits / Poster," released in June 1990. And articles, reviews, music charts, and concert announcements from publications such as New Music Express, Melody Maker, The Sun, Sounds, Ears, Bop City, Lime Lizard, Daily Mirror, Evening Sentinel, Manchester Evening News, and Bolton Evening News, all dating between October 1989 and September 1990. Despite having a sound heavily influenced by 1960s Soul, R&B, and Psychedelia, The Charlatans were long most closely associated with the Madchester scene of late 1980s Manchester. The band however, was founded in the West Midlands by bassist Martin Blunt in 1988, and relocated to Northwich, Cheshire, home of their new singer Tim Burgess and manager Steve Harrison in early 1990. It was there they formed the Dead Dead Good record label, having had no luck in securing a record contract, and released their first single "Indian Rope" in January 1990, which quickly became a number one hit on the British indie charts. The band has since released fourteen studio albums, thirteen of which charted in the top 40 of the UK Albums Chart, with three reaching number one, and have had 22 top 40 singles including four top ten entries in the UK Singles Chart.
