(1783 ou 1784). 123-(1 bl.) pp."Le Gazetier cuirassé ou anecdotes scandaleuses de la cour de France" fut un des libelles les plus choquants et les plus vendus de l'Ancien Régime. Ce type de pamphlet était utilisé par des écrivains réfugiés à Londres pour faire du chantage auprès des personnes diffamées. La police de Paris envoya à plusieurs reprises des agents secrets à Londres pour réduire au silence les libellistes par l'assassinat, le rapt ou la corruption. "Le Diable dans un bénitier" est une dénonciation publique de la plus importante de ces missions qui fut conduite par Receveur en 1783 avec l'aide de l'auteur du "Gazetier cuirassé" : Charles Théveneau de Morande, devenu informateur (mouche) de la police parisienne ! Les libellistes apprirent les projets de Receveur et l'entrainèrent dans tant d'intrigues stériles qu'à la fin il courut à travers la ville comme un canard décapité ou, un diable dans un bénitier.
