The rarest nineteenth-century map of Long Island With a large inset of "Brooklyn, New York, Jersey City, Hoboken, etc." This is probably the largest commer…cially published map of Long Island to date, which indicates the increasing population and importance of Long Island. Development in the eighteen years since the publication of the 1865 map has been dramatic. Explosive growth can be seen throughout Queens, especially in Jamaica and Garden City. Railroads now crisscross the island, with the Brooklyn & Montauk Railroad extending along its southern coast as far as Sag Harbor. The map was evidently first introduced in 1873. Rumsey (167) lists a later 1888 edition. Not in Phillips.

Later issue, first published in 1866 with "Nuevo Mapa del Imperio de Mexico" on the cover. Large-scale, detailed and quite rare folding map of Mexico, in Spanish, at a time of increasing U.S. investment, with railroads, both completed and projected, shown, with indication by color whether narrow or wide gauge, as well as roads, settlements, state boundaries, drainage, etc. with prime meridian at Mexico City. Includes Borderlands and Texas, running east from San Diego to Mississippi. This map was published in the midst of great railroad expansion in the region: the Southern Transcontinental Railroad was constructed between 1879 and 1881, and the Southern Pacific Railroad's "Sunset Route" was built from California to New Orleans by way of Yuma, Tucson, El Paso, and San Antonio. Farther north, predecessors of the Santa Fe Railroad were completed across New Mexico and Arizona by 1881 and 1882. This map seems to be based on Colton's map of the Empire of Mexico of 1866. "A useful guide to the constitutional history, especially for the period 1824 to 1859" (Larned 3925). First edition, with a pristine example of Colton's map of "Mexico and the United States and Their Mutual Relations" showing Mexico, most of Texas, the Borderlands, Belize, and Guatemala. Between 1831 and 1890, the Colton firm dominated American map publishing, and their atlases were the finest produced in the U.S. during the nineteenth century. The company was founded by Joseph Hutchins Colton (1800-1893), who had no formal training in geography or cartography; he began by purchasing copyrights of maps prepared by other individuals or companies, and his principal role was to manage the production and distribution of the maps. His first maps were drawn by the esteemed cartographer David H. Burr in the 1830s. By the 1850s Colton was also publishing guidebooks, atlases and immigrant and railroad maps. The firm was renamed G.W. & C.B. Colton in the 1860s when Colton was succeeded by his sons, George Woolworth Colton (1827-1901) and Charles B. Colton (c. 1831-1916). It is believed that George Colton compiled the company's 1855 Atlas of the World and served thereafter as the firm's principal map compiler, cartographer and engraver. The Colton firm refused to compromise quality, choosing to compete for sales in the more expensive international market rather than the cheap domestic one. For this reason, all maps were printed with steel plates, rather than as wax engravings, which was the most common method used at the time. Best known for pioneering the education of women, Abbot's book about the troubled relationship between the United States and Mexico "reveals an interest in history and politics, a strong sympathy for Mexican nationalism, especially in the figure of Benito Juárez, and an apparent antipathy toward the Roman Catholic church" (Patrick G.
