One can certainly say that the result is an outstanding work and one that has been widely acclaimed. Douie was posted to the 1st Dorsets towards the end of 1915 when he reached the age of nineteen, though before reporting to them he spent a short time with an entrenching battalion, and this record is in the main concerned with his service in his battalion on the Western Front. He joined them at Rainneville a few miles to the north of Amiens, and was posted to No 1 Platoon of A Company of whom he writes: The hand of death lay heavily on that company. To my certain knowledge fourteen, nearly one half, gave their lives, and of the remainder I do not know the fate of several. Apart from a brief two months in the Bethune sector (Aug/Sep 1916) Douie's battalion (14th Brigade, 32nd Division) was on the Somme from the end of 1915 to May 1917, when the battalion was sent north to Nieuport, and it is this period that takes up much of his powerfully descriptive narrative. At the time of the Armistice he was in Italy, away from his battalion, and the final chapter deals with this period.…

It was originally written as a series of articles for The Nineteenth Century and After in 1928; he later added more material for its publication as a book. His memoir is along the lines of Edmund Blunden's Undertones of War, possessing high literary merit, Douie was a well educated soldier. Douie enlisted in 1914 at eighteen years of age with a desire to become a Corporal, however his family obtained him a commission; eventually he became a subaltern in the 1st Dorset Regiment of the British Army. He opens his book with an examination of the soldier of WW1, his reasons for fighting and the existence he experienced at the front. He recounts his enthusiasm for war and wanting to get to the front before it ended; pursuing this goal against the objection of his family. His battalion participated in the Battle of the Somme in 1916 of which he was apart, fighting in the La Boisselle sector and later Thiepval which decimated his battalion. He ended the war in Italy though he has little to say about this campaign, ending his story with impressions of the Armistice on him and his fellow soldiers. Overall this is an exceptional account and has been largely overlooked except by WW1 enthusiasts who consider it a classic. EB; 8vo 8" - 9" tall.…
