Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Richard Surflet (Trans.). London: Printed by Arnold Hatfield for John Norton and John Bill, 1606. Likely the second edition, as the first edition and no other is cited in Fussell as1600 ([29] ; various prefaces, addresses, summaries; 901; [26] tables). Quarto, 18cm x 23cm, in full leather (apparently rebacked at some early date, replaced endpapers), woodcuts illustrating, for example, stills and geometry of layouts. Surflet's translation of L'Agriculture et Maison Rustique by Estienne and Liebaut (who, in turn, translated Estienne's Latin), a 'voluminous treatise' similar in scope and intent to Barnabi Googe's Foure Bookes of Husbandrie (1577) covering 'family life, rural diversions, and the curious medical practices of the time, as well as the principles of farming, including the layout of a farm' (Fussell, The Old English Farming Books, 12-13), in short, an early country handbook and encyclopaedia which, if it could not bring science fully to bear on farming and country life, at least sought to bring reason as the Elizabethans understood it. An important foundation book on agriculture and health (also distilleries). Entirely presentable and quite a scarce book.
