The author, a seasoned seafarer, brings to life the creatures' habits, migrations, and unique characteristics, drawing upon his firsthand experience as a whaling captain. Delving into the historical context of the American whale fishery, the book vividly portrays the thrilling, yet dangerous, hunt for these magnificent creatures, contrasting the methods of the industrialized whaling industry with the traditional techniques of the Native American tribes of the North-West Coast. Beyond a simple account of the whaling industry, the book explores the intelligence and complex social structures of these creatures, highlighting the California Gray Whale's remarkable resilience and adaptability in the face of human intrusion. The author's intimate knowledge of these creatures, gleaned from years of observation, provides invaluable insights into the natural history of the California Gray Whale, offering a glimpse into a world that continues to intrigue and inspire. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. With its skillfully executed single and double-page lithographs of the major species, this is one of the most dramatic and attractive American whaling books. The frontispiece, "Whaling Scene in the California Lagoons" makes for quite an impressive beginning. Forster 713. Jenkins p. 143. Bound in green cloth as issued, with gold cover design and spine lettering. The backstrip has been professionally laid down. The boards show some wear, but gold spine lettering and cover design (a roaring sea lion) are intact . Internally in good condition, with a light water stain in the lower corner of the first 77 pages, not affecting plates or text block. 4to, 30.5 cm. 319, v pp. b/w line ills., lithographed plates frontispiece.
