Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. First edition, 4to. 96 plates, most in color. Bound in 1/2 morocco and blue textured boards. This copy belonged to Alexis Jean Fournier (1865-1948) and shows a presentation inscription to him from Lt. John J. Lynch, a World War I pilot. The inscription reads "To Alexis Jean Fournier, Artist, worthy emulator of Harpignies, from his affectionate friend John J. Lynch, Lieut. Royal Flying Corps. (Somme Flyer) Christmas 1917." On the next page (the half- title) Lynch has written "vive le entente cordialeive!" Alexis Jean Fournier was one of the most flamboyant and enduring figures of the Arts and Crafts movement and was also an Impressionist painter of major importance living in Minneapolis from 1883 to 1893. Fournier, a Barbizon-style artist, whose career as the "Roycroft Court Painter" spanned over forty-five years, has been lauded as one of the most prolific artists of the Arts and Crafts period as well as an influential force in Elbert Hubbard's Roycroft community in East Aurora, New York. He studied under Henri-Joseph Harpignie, a French landscape painter of the Barbizon school. A reproduction of one of his paintings is in the book. Lieutenant Lynch of the Royal Flying corps of Great Britain, was a former United States cavalryman and newspaper man. He was cited for bravery during the Battle of Somme. The "Roycroft," Volume 1 Number 2, page 40, October 1917 alleges that he "dispatched" as many as 11 German flyers during the battle. The upper spine shows a few horizontal wrinkles, a short vertical split, and a crack where the front joint meets the hinge. A very good copy of a scarce book with several ties to Hubbard and the Roycrofters.
