Architectural terracottas as a category are gradually gaining more attention in both Greece and Central Italy, greatly due to re- cent finds which shed new light on the early periods of terracotta manufacture, but the "classical" period of great terracotta roofs on Sicily in particular has not attracted a comparable interest. Although new finds have been made, and older material published, works of a more synthetic nature are rare. Even though the importance of Sicily and Magna Graecia is obvious for anyone studying the development of the architectural terracotta industry, there has been a certain reluctance towards grap- pling with this material. The major summarizing works are by now fairly old, the main ones having been written forty to fifty years ago (Darsow, Dachterrrakotten, in 1938; Süsserott, Herkunft, in 1944). Even G. Scichilone's Treivestimenti, which draws many general conclusions apart from the strict publication of three Selinuntine revetments, is now more than twenty years old. This is a serious neglect of an extremely interesting field, particularly since new finds during the 1960's and 70's, without necessarily creating any fundamental change of the previous views, have at least enriched and complemented the known material to a large ex tent. this need for a large and ambitious synthesis The present work is not intended to remedy of Sicilian architectural terracottas as a whole. It is rather envisaged as an aid to any students of this material, and partly as a stopgap until work. The clear need for a corpus of Sicilian somebody else hopefully tackles the greater material from published accounts became ap- parent to me when trying to study it as part of the background for work on the archaic Etrus- can painted architectural terracottas of Acquarossa. Trying to assemble a view of the Sicilian material is difficult at best, since the number of publications is large, and the ear- lier periods of excavation (roughly the first two decades of the twentieth century) are re- ported in a very unwieldy way in volumes of the Monumenti Antichi. In addition, neither Darsow nor Süsserott present illustrations of the material treated.
