Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Good for Age. 1st English Edition. English translation by William Nicholson of the 1798 French original with an added Appendix. On the title page the book is described in detail: "The Art of Bleaching Piece-Goods, Cottons and Threads, of Every Description, Rendered More easy and general by Means of the Oxygenated Muriatic Acid; with the Method of Rendering painted or printed Goods perfectly white or colourless. To which are added, the most certain Methods of bleaching Silk and Wool, and the Discoveries made by the Author in the Art of bleaching Paper. Illustrated with nine large Plates, in Quarto, representing all the utensils and manipulations of the bleaching process. An elementary work, composed for the use of manufacturers, bleachers, dyers, callico printers and paper-makers". Oxygenated muriatic acid was the name given to chlorine when phlogiston-based theories still held sway. Pajot des Charmes was formerly an Inspector of Manufactures. In 1786 he had analysed and improved an earlier quality control system for dyeing aimed at avoiding adulteration and fraud. He defined three levels of quality: grand et bon teint, semi-bon teint and faux teint, and procedures for testing dyed fabrics against these standards. This was then used throughout the dyeing industry. This is the First Edition of his practical textbook on bleaching by the chlorine process in which he simplifies and makes safer and more manageable the complex iterative methods developed by Berthollet from 1791 when he introduced chlorine bleaching. Des Charmes added potash or soda, or these and quicklime, to the chlorine and recommended the workmen wear masks and chew licorice to avoid the ill effects of chlorine. Recently rebound in half-leather with marbled boards. Gilt short author and title on spine with five raised bands.
