La Fondation saint Thomas avait été reconnue comme organisme d'instruction publique. Mais l'importance de ses biens (en particulier ses possessions en terres et en bâtiments) et de son influence avait attiré la convoitise de la mairie de Strasbourg qui voulut les saisir. La Mairie fut déboutée par le conseil de préfecture le 17 octobre 1855. Chauffour défendra la cause du séminaire Saint Thomas, Emile Detroyes étant l'avocat de la Ville de Strasbourg. 2 volumes in 8, brochés. Couvertures d'éditeur, titre en noir, faux titre, page de titre, 572 pages. Etats moyens, partiellement déreliés, dos coupés, avec manques de couverture, couverture foncées petites coupures. Intérieur avec quelques pâles rousseurs. Les deux tomes proviennent de la bibliothèque de Chauffour, avec sa signature sur la couverture du premier tome.
