Soft cover. Condizione: Very Good. Original publisher's gray paper wrappers with staple binding. Green lettering printed on front cover. No lettering on spine. 7 1/2" x 10 1/2." Fifty pages, complete. Pages are very clean and intact. Covers are clean and intact except for light age toning. A Very Good, almost Near Fine copy. Number Six of The Old West Series. This is Part One of a biographical account detailing the life of Bill Williams (1787-1849), an American fur trapper, mountaineer, frontiersman, trader, guide, and explorer. He was also known as William Sherley "Old Bill" Williams or "Lone Elk" to some Indigenous Peoples. Williams became fluent in several Indigenous languages and worked for a period in his life as an interpreter and Indian agent for the United States government. Williams lived with the Osage tribe and married an Osage woman named A-C'in-Ga but left the Osage Nation after his wife's passing in 1825. Williams was notably hired by John C. Fremont to help him travel through the Southern Rocky Mountains in his fourth expedition. Williams had warned Fremont about traveling through the La Garita Mountains in winter, but Fremont ignored him. Several men and most of the pack animals on the expedition succumbed to the elements. Williams led a rescue expedition in which he saved some of the survivors. From the La Garita Mountains, the expedition then moved south toward Taos. In March 1849, Williams and Dr. Benjamin Kern returned to the La Garita Mountains in the hopes of finding more survivors of Fremont's ill-fated expedition but were unfortunately killed by Ute warriors for trespassing on their lands. The author of this pamphlet sheds more light on this enigmatic figure and includes episodes from Williams's life including his friendship with Jesus Rupert Valdez Archeleuta who accompanied him on several expeditions and fur trapping and hunting trips. Archeleuta provides many of the anecdotes relayed herein. Also included are accounts of Williams by George Frederick Ruxton, Colonel Triplett, and others. The following are more episodes highlighted in Williams's life: Williams's early careers as a minister and merchant, Williams's interactions with Indigenous tribes such as the Comanche and Pueblo, exploring the Arizona petrified forest, explorations in the Southwest along the Colorado River, arriving to the Grand Canyon, rescuing a lost Ute infant, trading with different Indigenous tribes, being attacked by Blackfeet warriors, and numerous fur trapping trips including ones along the Little Wind River and Green River.
