Informative essays are illuminated by a wealth of exquisite color reproductions, including numerous specially photographed color details and two dazzling foldouts. The book begins with the emergence of the distinctive Sienese style in the mid-1200s -- emphasizing brilliant color, elaborate pattern, and elegant goldwork -- and spans the refined work of the late Baroque period. Illustrated and discussed are the paintings, frescoes, altarpieces, and other works of such early Sienese masters as Duccio di Buoninsegna, Simone Martini, and the gifted brothers Ambrogio and Pietro Lorenzetti. Featured too are Sienese artists working in the Renaissance, Mannerist, and Baroque styles, among them Sassetta, Domenico Beccafumi. Francesco Vanni, and Ventura Salimbeni, to name but a few. For almost five hundred years, from the late Middle Ages into the seventeenth century, the Italian city of Siena was a thriving center of trade, learning, and fine art. This book is the first to celebrate its influential and impressive artistic heritage. Siena's distinctive style of painting was created in the early fourteenth century by such masters as Duccio di Buoninsegna and Simone Martini, emphasizing brilliant color, elaborate pattern, and elegant goldwork. Soon after, in the middle of the century, the gifted brothers Ambrogio and Pietro Lorenzetti introduced a new feeling for space, weight, and volume to their figures, and, following the example of the Florentine master Giotto, the emphatic expression of individual personalities. The Lorenzettis were also the first Italian masters of landscape painting. In the sixteenth century, the Sienese artist Sodoma traveled to Rome to work with Raphael for the Sienese cardinal Chigi, and later Domenico Beccafumi became one of the driving forces of Italian Mannerism. Lo scopo che si prefigge un'opera di sintesi come questa è quello di verificare, anche alla luce degli studi e delle scoperte più recenti, se possono valere ancora il metodo di lettura e l'interpretazione storica proposti agli albori del secolo, o se, invece, fatte salve le fondamentali acquisizioni scientifiche frutto di questi anni cruciali di intensa ricerca, non sia necessario un profondo ripensamento.
