Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. English summary: It is by now widely acknowledged that between late antiquity and the first centuries of Islam, Syriac-speaking Christian communities were more than just scattered minority communities with little impact in geographical areas strongly shaped by the Iranian element. "Iranianate and Syriac Christianity" bridges across different specialized disciplines, first and foremost Iranian Studies and Syriac Studies and the History of Christianity, and assembles a range of authoritative voices on the subject. The 14 contributions are arranged in two sections: Mission, Conversion and Power and Languages, Texts and Concepts, representing a wide range of approaches and reflecting the complexity of the religious, political and cultural history of the Christian communities in the Eurasian area up to the year 1000 and beyond. On the basis of a thorough philological-linguistic study, the book aims primarily at reintegrating the complex whole of the various phenomena that have contributed to creating what in modern scholarship runs under the name of Christian Sogdian Gospel Lectionary E5, a set of manuscript fragments preserved in the Turfan Collection in Berlin. The study applies a precise methodology that puts various disciplinary approaches on the same level in order to relate and interconnect textual, material and historical-cultural aspects. Specific codicological characteristics are considered in correlation with the broader manuscript tradition to which the fragments belong. The discussion of the Gospel lectionary leads to reflections on the transmission, reception and development of a specific body of religious knowledge, namely that of the Church of the East. The exploration of linguistic phenomena takes also into consideration the processes at work in the missionary history of the Church of the East in Central Asia between Late Antiquity and the early Middle Ages in the Oasis of Turfan in present-day Xinjiang, China. The book therefore addresses Iranologists as well as students of Eastern Christianity and of manuscript cultures.

I-II --- Although the documentation that has come down to us is problematic in many aspects, it is safe to claim that the reception of the Gospels in the early medieval and medieval Central Asia is linked to Syriac Christianity and, even if not exclusively, to the Church of the East indeed. The Christian manuscript fragments of the Berlin Turfan Collection are a striking example of this, which is why they constitute the subject of this contribution. Our aim is to focus on the role of the four Evangelists, and in particular of Mark, in the context of the Christian communities that probably lived in the Turfan area (Xinjiang, China) from the eighth/ninth century until the thirteenth/fourteenth century. The focus is on Mark so that his scanty attestation is not relegated to pure chance of what has come down to us and what has been irreversibly lost. Keywords: Syriac Christianity Biblical Studies Liturgical Studies Iranian Studies.

Punto metallico. 12pp --- What tools in education did the Manichaean and Christian monastic traditions deploy in the mixed environment of the Turfan oasis between the 8th and 11th centuries? And above all, what was the role of Iranian speakers in education? From a methodological point of view, how should one approach the chosen topic when one has largely fragmentary and decontextualised material? Philological-linguistic and historical-religious research over the past century has yielded exceptional results, both with regard to the transmission of religious knowledge from the centres to the frontier zones and with regard to its circulation at the local level. We will discuss the education of monks inside monasteries, although mostly faced with an argumentum ex silentio and trying to identify the fitting educational root(s).
