".with a section on the National Parks of Southern Africa by C. Selwyn Stokes, and illustrations and map by H.E. Winder. A contemporary account of the 3-year-long, 500-mile wanderings across southern Africa of Huberta the hippo". She became a minor celebrity in South Africa, revered by Zulus and Xhosas, and her journey was keenly followed by readers of Punch, The Morning Post and The Chicago Tribune, before she was shot to death by farmers in April 1931. "The book is a record of the animal's adventures, in association with comment on the fierce war that goes on ceaselessly in the bush-wild, together with some of the history of the territory through which Huberta passed" (from the author's Preface). .

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fair. First Edition. Cloth. 241pp. Illust. Maps. Index. A good read from the days when Africa was the romantically & mystically "dark" continent. Trace of black on base of spine from old dj protector. Part of cover edges along spine & fore edge are slightly shiny due to offset of old dj protector. The unattractive printed dj has chips & is somewhat dark & quite soiled. Old tape reinforces it, & new archival tape has been used to reattach the detached blank back flap. Thus, a vg copy in problematic, but mostly complete dj.

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. A very good copy in red cloth binding. The binding is clean and undamaged, showing only minor bumping and a little wear to the spine ends. The gilt lettering to the spine is somewhat worn and dulled, but still entirely legible. Inside everything is clean and tight with no ownership inscriptions or other markings, other than a neatly inked owner's signature to the top of the ffep. The eighteen full-page plates are all present, as are numerous other full page monochrome plates. From the author's preface: "The purpose of this book is to tell the splendid story of Southern Africa, and of the men who adventured far and suffered much to make it great. The aim has been to treat the subject broadly; and not only to combine the topographical and industrial facts of the Present with those of the picturesque Past, but also to stress adequately the real-life adventure stories of our own times. Without these the picture must be incomplete".
