From a community library (stamped on front papers; otherwise no library markings, sleeves, etc.). Chittenden was a historian of the American West and has numerous books and papers credited to him. Among the books perhaps most notable a two volume history of the fur trade. This is a scarce item found only in a few libraries. Front hinge broken and lost of paper upper corner of front paste down. Photo shows corner of front cover peeled back a little. This has been archivally repaired. Fair to good copy thus that will reward a bit of professional conservation.…

(portrait of Hiram Martin Chittenden), foreword, biographical notes, illustrated, personal notes, appendices, a Chittenden checklist, footnotes, selected references, index. This book is edited with notes and Introduction by Bruce Le Roy. Chittenden travelled extensively in the West with reports on trips to Yellowstone, the Pacific Coast, to Wyoming and Colorado, and to Jackson Hole and Idaho in 1896 and 1897. He authored several works on the Fur Trade. Fine copy a fine original slipcase. Some minor scuffing and edgewear to original cardboard slipcase. …

An interesting copy; apparently purchased on a trip to Yellowstone from Eau Claire, Wisconsin, taken from July 28 - August 6, 1911. Inked on the front pastedown is a list of trip members who stayed at the Yellowstone Lake Hotel. On the rear pastedown is a list of additional trip members - some in ink, some in pencil (some from New York, Indiana and Minneapolis). Also lists the name of the "Driver". Laid-in is a folded, typed copy of the proposed itinerary, including rail travel schedule and info for hotel stays. States copies sent to the travel members, the Supt of the Yellowstone Park Hotel Co. , and to Mr. Brack concerning the reservation of stage coach seats during the trip. This itinerary is on the letterhead of H. Wehmann & Co. Of Minneapolis (one of the trip members name was Wehmann). Also laid in are two telegram messages received during the tip - headed with "Yellowstone Park Hotel Co. , Private Wires". Also laid-in is an unused Fort Yellowstone post card - can only assume it was purchased during the trip. There is a large circular "Yellowstone Park Association Hotels" sticker affixed to the front flyleaf. There is some rubbing, light bumping at the corners and spine extremities. The spine is a bit sunned. The spine gilt lettering is dull; but that on the front board is bright. Just a bit of very light surface rubbing. Else the binding is clean. Small (~1/4") tear on the front inner hinge. There is a blindstamp of the owner's name (one of the trip members, of a prominent Eau Claire, Wisconsin family) on the front flyleaf. The page edges are a bit age-toned. Else the pages are clean. The folding map at the rear is present, and clean (map staring to detach from the pastedown at the lower half). States: "Sixth Edition, Revised and Enlarged". ; 26C; 8" x 5-1/4"; 355 pages.…
