Denn für unsere Besuche im ?Heiligen Land' hatten wir uns mittlerweile 10 verschiedene Reiseführer gekauft, ohne letztlich das Richtige gefunden zu haben. Dann ergaben unsere Erkundungen, daß es noch 15 weitere auf dem Markt gibt; doch wir hegten nicht viel Hoffnung, daß es bei diesen anders werden würde. Denn drei Momente kehrten in schöner Regelmäßigkeit bei den meisten Reiseführern wieder: 1. Israel scheint nur aus antiken Bauten und deren Ruinen zu bestehen. Immer ist nur die Rede von Kirchen, Moscheen, Tempeln, Ruinen, Festungen, Synagogen, Mosaiken, Türmen, Gedächtnisstätten, Museen, Statuen, Zitadellen, Gewölben, Klöstern, Basiliken, Stadtmauern, Höhlen, Zisternen, antiken Badehäusern, Gräbern, Grotten, Innenhöfen, Wällen, Inschriften usw. usw. Zwar ist Palästina eine der ältesten Kulturlandschaften der Erde, und diese Spuren lassen sich als beinahe fünftausend Jahre Geschichte konzentriert im großen Freiluftmuseum Israel besichtigen, trotzdem darf unserer Meinung nach Begegnung mit Kultur nicht auf eine solchermaßen definierte beschränkt bleiben. 2. Die meisten Reiseführer ? so kam es uns vor ? werden für christliche Abendländler geschrieben, die ihre Kenntnisse aus dem Kommunions-, Konfirmations- und Religionsunterricht bei einer Israel-Reise zu überprüfen sich veranlaßt sehen müssen. Das Rekurrieren auf die Bibel mit seitenlangen Zitaten und die Unbescheidenheit, mit der fast ausschließlich christliche Stätten erwähnt und als besichtigungswürdig vorgestellt werden, muß all jene Israel-Fahrer sauer machen, die nun mal nicht auf den Spuren Jesu wandeln wollen. 3. In durchweg allen Reiseführern kommen die Palästinenser, die historischen Bewohner des heutigen Israels, erheblich zu kurz. wenn sie überhaupt vorkommen. Meist wird von ihnen nur in Redewendungen wie ,malerische Beduinen' gesprochen. Oft steht nur unkritische Bewunderung für die Israelis, die die unfruchtbare Wüste bewohnbar machen und sich einer riesigen Übermacht tapfer und heldenmütig erwehren. So gut wie nie liest man, daß sie dies auf Grund und Boden tun, deren Besitz völkerrechtlich sehr zweifelhaft erworben wurde und daß viele der ehemaligen Eigentümer bzw. deren Kinder und Kindeskinder heute in Flüchtlingslagern leben.
