In good to fair condition. Binding slightly cocked. Boards normally scuffed at edges and worn/bumped at corners. Head and tail of spine collapsed with frayed cloth; gilt lettering on spine soiled/dulled, but still legible. Dampness staining found regularly on either bottom corner or fore-edge of leaves through text-block. Ownership bookplate pasted-in on front end-page: "Walter Merriam Pratt". Tissue guards of plates 2 & 5 LACKING - other tissue guards are torn, creased & age-stained. Toning and sporadic age-staining through text-block. Binding intact. Louis Legrand Noble (1813-1882) was an American Episcopal clergyman, poet, and writer, best known as the close friend, pastor, and primary biographer of the Hudson River School painter Thomas Cole. He is celebrated for chronicling the intersection of 19th-century American art, nature, and exploration. Frederic Edwin Church (1826 - 1900) was an American landscape painter born in Hartford, Connecticut. He was a central figure in the Hudson River School of American landscape painters, best known for painting large landscapes, often depicting mountains, waterfalls, and sunsets. Church's paintings put an emphasis on realistic detail, dramatic light, and panoramic views. He debuted some of his major works in single-painting exhibitions to a paying and often enthralled audience in New York City. In his prime, he was one of the most famous painters in the United States. Church's friendship with Isaac Israel Hayes, a prominent arctic explorer, stimulated the artist's interest in the arctic regions. In 1859, Church and his good friend Rev. Louis Legrand Noble traveled to Newfoundland and Labrador. The journey was chronicled in Noble's book After Icebergs with a Painter (1861), published shortly before Church's painting The Icebergs went on display. First Edition, Complete lithographs. Binding tight and solid. In 1859, Congregational clergyman Lewis Noble set out for Labrador and the Newfoundland coast in company with American landscape artist, Frederick Edwin Church, for the purpose of studying and sketching icebergs. This is the account of that voyage to Battle Harbour and of the return journey by way of the west coast of Newfoundland, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, and the Bay of Fundy, with incidental remarks on sealing, missionary activities, native races, &c. "Church's paintings of the Arctic icebergs, begun on his first trip to the north in 1859, represented in a marine subject Church's awe of these romantic hinterlands. The more important paintings resulting from the trip [are] now lost. [The lithographs, tinted pale green], create the effect of an eerie northern wasteland, but possessing just the dramatic power that the artist sought. To Church the icebergs were symbols of the north. In such subjects he found both an expression of a continental geology and a sense of cosmic meaning." ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall.
