Of those 40 pages, seven are views of movie theater and nickelodeon plans that incorporate the new laws. Publisher's printed and stapled brown wrappers. Near fine condition. OCLC locates only two copies.Projection booths and the nitrate film stock led to a great many fires in the early days of the motion picture industry. Likely more harm was dome to the public buy the stampeding than the fire itself. In the diagram of a properly constructed projection both we can see that asbestos was liberally used.…

Soft cover. Condizione: Good. E.J. Marey. Two-Part Article . "Photography of Moving Objects of Animal Movement by Chronophotography" in Scientific American Supplement. Including: Paper 1: "Photography of Moving Objects of Animal Movement by Chronophotography" in Scientific American Supplement vol 23 no. 579, New York, 5 February 1887, pp 9243-9246 in the issue of pp 9239-9254. 16"x10.5". Illustrated with 17 figures and photos, numbered 1-17 and continued to 34 images in the next issue. GOOD condition (5/10). Approximately 2000 words over these few pages—about 4000 words in the two papers all together. Paper 2: "Photography of Moving Objects of Animal Movement by Chronophotography" in Scientific American Supplement, #580, New York, 12 February 1887, pp 9255-9270, with figures in text numbered 18-34. 16"x10.5". This is the full weekly issue extracted from a larger bound volume. Nice copy. GOOD condition (5/10). Approximately 2000 words over these few pages. The illustrations include 5 photos of a horse in motion as well as 4 drawings depicting the action of the horse's motion; also 5 photos of a seagull (plus 1 drawing). This includes the famous rendering of the stage of the horse's gallop showing all four legs off the ground and gathered underneath the horse—something that people did not expect to see, horses being rendered at this point with legs fore and aft being outstretched in front and behind. This is the second part of a two part article (the first appearing 5 February 1887). Etienne Jules Marey is one of my favorite 19th century science figures. He worked across numerous fields, though I think his great importance is in the invisible-to-visible part--that he was able to make was were essentially moving pictures of complex and/or fast action, displaying motion in shockingly easy manner. His work opened as much of a new and surprising world as that of Lippershey/Galileo and Co. with the telescope and Janssen/Leeuwenhoek/ and the others with the microscope.  He is of course a contemporary of Eadweard Muybridge, and while their work is smilar their approaches are quite different as is their apparatus. Together they supplied the essentials for the coming of cinema and motion pictures, and also for understanding the "flow" of motion and biomechanics.…

No Binding. Condizione: Good. **Autograph letter, signed. Hannibal Goodwin--Inventor of FLEXIBLE FILM** Letter from the Inventor of Flexible Roll Film to the Inventor of the Half-Tone Autograph Letter, signed, dated 19 June 1884, from Hannibal Goodwin (1822-1900) to Stephen Henry Horgan (1854-1941) concerning Goodwin's relative, Demas Barnes (1827-1882). 6"x 3.5". "In 1887 in Newark, New Jersey, an Episcopalian minister named Hannibal Goodwin developed the idea of using celluloid as a base for photographic emulsions. The inventor and industrialist George Eastman, who had earlier experimented with sensitized paper rolls for still photography, began manufacturing celluloid roll film in 1889 at his plant in Rochester, New York. This event was crucial to the development of cinematography: series photography such as Marey's chronophotography could employ glass plates or paper strip film because it recorded events of short duration in a relatively small number of images, but cinematography would inevitably find its subjects in longer, more complicated events, requiring thousands of images and therefore just the kind of flexible but durable recording medium represented by celluloid. It remained for someone to combine the principles embodied in the apparatuses of Muybridge and Marey with celluloid strip film to arrive at a viable motion-picture camera."--Encyclopedia Britannica (Thomas Edison, "Kinetoscope") This is a very interesting piece of cinema and photographic history. Horgan was--for all intents and purposes--the first to the table with a practical form of half-tone, making reproductions of photographs for main stream popular press a reality (from about 1873-1880, the New York Daily Graphic printing the "first reproduction of a photograph with a full tonal range in a newspaper". Barnes was a successful businessman and one-term NY congressman (1867-9), who seems to have made a lot of money on popular quack medicines, one of which was a cure-all later to be known as Fletcher's Castoria. (In another letter Goodwin refers to this "medicine" as being made of nothing but squeezed corn stalks and alcohol. This is a very interesting piece of photographic history showing a connection between two great innovators in the art. Signed by Author(s). …
