Within a few short months of its establishment in 1775 with a handful of small ships and a few dozen seamen the US Navy was harrying its British enemies with great success. As a token of this effectiveness the US Navy's first great triumph, the victory of John Paul Jones and the Bonnehomme Richard over the Sarapis, was won only a few miles from the English coast. The tradition of raiding and harassing attacks was continued in the War of 1812 with the Constitution's defeat of the Java, perhaps the finest of many fine successes. Despite victories in these and other conflicts the Navy was largely neglected until the outbreak of the Civil War when both sides quickly built substantial naval forces. The eventual success of the North's naval blockade was one of the decisive factors ensuring the defeat of the Confederacy. Both navies were at the forefront of the technological development also as the Battle of Hampton Roads between the Monitor and Merrimac shows. Since World War II the US Navy has played an important part in the Korean and Vietnam Wars- emerging from even that most controversial conflict with an untarnished reputation. Most recently the Navy has kept a high profile in support of US policy in the Middle East and Central America and, even without the presently planned expansion, its nuclear carrier battle groups and ballistic missile submarines provide an astonishing and devastating range of capabilities. From the end of the Civil War American eyes began to look abroad and gradually a stronger and still more effective Navy was created. Trimmed (leaf dimensions roughly 165 x 135 mm) causing loss of the last line of text (the publication details beneath the word 'LONDON') on the title. Stitched as issued. Unbound. In poor condition, on aged, spotted and creased paper, with chipping to extremities and with the lower part of the last leaf torn away causing loss of around a dozen lines of text. A few lines in a contemporary hand on the first couple of leaves. The declaration, covering four pages, is complete and entirely legible, with the loss to the first page of the letter. Giving 'the true grounds, reasons and ends of this our Engagement': '[.] the KING our Father is a close Prisoner in the power of His Enemies, and [.] His good people lie miserably groaning under the cruell Tyranny of fellow Subjects [.] by force of Armes, to endeavour to free Him and them from these unheard-of outrages'. Cloth, morocco backstrip; folio (400x260mm); approx. pp. 100 full of manuscript entries by a single hand, with permanent instructions and headings in ink, and crew member names and station designations in pencil; numerous additional blanks at rear. (Nonetheless, a trove of information.) Lined paper, listing the 614 men aboard, assigning each a number, gun, and location (Fore Castle Port, Main Top, Mizzen Top, etc.); listing division and stations; and recording details of every situation that might occur on the ship (see examples below). The ship is unnamed, but it appears to be a ship of the Line or a Frigate, which had 3 masts as well as some minimal amount of steam power. There were 6 African-American members of the crew, all of whom were Union Sailors during the Civil War (Edward Turner Joseph Davis, and Thomas Mills from Maryland; Henry Andres from the West Indies; Joseph Gordan from New York; Samuel R. Whittaker from Buenos Aires). Three of these men served on the USS Minnesota, which may help identify the ship. Also includes the ship's Fire Bill, crew member stations of Making Sail from Single Anchor, Mooring and Unmooring, and much more. A rich volume, worthy of further study. July 1863-March 1864. A set of six financial documents relating to two ships. The barque Texas and the barque Alamo were owned by Oliver H. Perry, a shipping merchant from Southport, Connecticut. The Texas was lost at sea in late 1862 while serving the Union cause during the American Civil War. Five of the six documents report Perrys earnings on the ships. These are from Connecticut shipping company Wakeman, Dimon & Co., who operated Perrys ships. The sixth letter is from the Atlantic Insurance Company. It concerns Perrys insurance policies on the ships. The documents are in very good condition overall with folds.…
