Gently used dust jacket. -- This biography reconstructs the life and public career of Anne Newport Royall (1769-1854), a widow of a Revolutionary War veteran who became one of the most prominent and controversial women in Jacksonian America. Born on the Maryland frontier and largely self-taught, she gained her formal education through the extensive library of her husband, Major William Royall. Left penniless after a jury nullified her late husband's will, Royall reinvented herself in her late fifties as a travel writer, publishing nine volumes of sharp-eyed observations on American society, politics and manners as she journeyed from Louisiana to Maine. Her 'Black Books' offered sardonic portraits of the powerful and became widely read, while her novel The Tennessean and her Letters from Alabama documented frontier life in the expanding republic. The study traces Royall's transition from itinerant author to Washington-based newspaper editor and political commentator. In 1831, following her notorious conviction as a 'common scold' under an archaic English common law - a case widely regarded as the last witch trial in America - she launched Paul Pry, later renamed The Huntress, and continued publishing until her death at eighty-five. From this platform she pursued investigative reporting on political corruption, fraudulent land schemes, banking scandals and what she perceived as the dangerous entanglement of evangelical religion with government. She also used her newspapers to champion causes such as the protection of the Masonic fraternity and the maintenance of Sunday mail service. Clapp situates Royall within the broader context of gender, religion and partisan politics in antebellum America, examining how she navigated and challenged the boundaries imposed on women's public participation a generation before the organised suffrage movement.
