Within nineteenth-century America, the young author of this collection of prose and poetry pours forth the convictions and beliefs of his Christian faith. Written under the influence and inspiration of the author's awakenings and spiritual journey, this book reveals the author's relationship with both the divine and the human world, grappling with themes of sin, joy, and salvation through Christ. Often riffing on, or directly quoting, biblical scripture, the author contends that religion should be a cheerful and happy practice, seeking not only to worship and praise, but also to engage in acts of kindness and charity in the real world. Addressing the concerns and questions of his time, the author speaks to the specific sins and issues faced by people living ordinary lives while drawing from the wisdom of the Bible and personal faith.
