Hardcover. Condizione: Fair. First Edition. This fairly rare second edition presents 27 classes of animals for examination. While not a technical textbook, it is an examination of animal behavior, natural history, and moral instruction, presenting short narratives and anecdotes designed to teach both scientific curiosity and ethical lessons. The tone is typical of Methodist juvenile literature of the period: uplifting, didactic, and aimed at shaping character through stories of animal intelligence, loyalty, instinct, and courage. The structure is episodic; each chapter focuses on a specific animal or behavior, using real or embellished anecdotes to illustrate traits such as bravery, affection, cunning, or perseverance. Previous owner inscription on first page. Fairly heavy foxing, dog-ears, etc. A well-enjoyed copy but still fairly solid. Appears to be a second edition 1857, as Swormstedt & Poe publishers transitioned to Hitchcock & Walden in the 1860s. There are other books with similar title, misconstrued as later versions of this book from the 1880s on, many illustrated, are incorrectly listed as first or second editions of THIS book. The only two books in the Fireside Reading series (Animals, Birds & Fishes) were published in 1856-1857. Hard cover edition. 416 pages. Dimensions: 4.75" by 6.5". Published by Swormstedt & Poe, Cincinnati, OH Copyright 1856, 2nd printing, 1857. Dark Blue binding. Cover defect(s): Some scratches/scuffing. Some chipping. Moderate corner/edge damage. Some spine cover damage. Page defect(s): Some writing. Some dog eared pages. Moderate foxing. Some soiling/smudges from handling. 1 Pound Media Shipping Rate with Multiple Product Orders.
