"Sugartown, dependent on a single crop, is characterized by fluctuations between high earnings and bare subsistence. Orange Grove is a closely knit farming community giving an even and relatively high level of income. In Mocca there is consistent and extreme poverty. Taking these three widely differing rural communities for intensive study, Miss Clarke gives the first study by an anthropologist of the peasant and working class family, in Jamaica. She records first the historical background of present social organization and describes the three centres. This is followed by an account of the traditional system of land inheritance and the use of family land. Little is known about this intricate system and it has a very great effect on the family. The peasant and working class attitudes towards marriage and the conditions to be fulfilled before it is considered proper to enter into a permanent conjugal union are fully examined. Then follows an outspoken account of current ideas and practices in regard to sex and procreation. The different conjugal relationships popularly lumped under the term ' concubinage ' find their place here.". 227 pp.
