Düsseldorfer Monatshefte was a satirical monthly published from 1847-1861 in Düsseldorf, considered to be the periodical whose illustrations were of the highest quality in Prussia. Artists contributing were…predominantly from Düsseldorf, most of them from the Düsseldorf Malerschule (Düsseldorf Painting School), e.g. Andreas Achenbach, Oswald Achenbach, Wilhelm Camphausen, Theodor Hildebrandt, Friedrich Lilotte, Henry Ritter, Adolf Schroedter, Franz Wieschebrink, and Johann Baptist Sonderland. A few notable exceptions were Theodor Hosemann from Berlin, and Ferdinand Schröder from Zeulenroda. The model for the concept of the Düsseldorf periodical had been the satirical magazine Le Charivari, published in Paris. This collection of lithographs is comprised of caricatures taken from the 8th volume of the periodical, from a number of issues, and contain a selection of Jewish caricatures captioned with satirical, descriptive and anti-Semitic texts. The texts capture anti-Semitic perception of the characteristics of Jews as they were perceived by the German population, in these instances being stingy, money grubbing and conniving. Three of the four contain text above the image crediting the volume and issue from which it was taken. The final leaf has been trimmed slightly at the top and bottom of the plate resulting in this text, as well as the very bottom of the below text being lost. Some of the lithographs are initialed within the image of the plates, but these are mostly indecipherable. Plates with foxing, mostly confined to the margins. Images mostly quite clean. Plates in good- to very good- condition overall.
