In Sicily, the regime of the tyrants collapsed; the population of Ionia began to enjoy the freedom so recently won in the struggle with the Persians and their tyrants; in the mainland, Athens emerged from the national war against the barbarians as a second great power beside Sparta, which was at this time making strenuous efforts to conserve her well-tried social fabric. Radical transformations are observable, however, not only in the field of politics, but also in that of religion. Whereas it was only through Euripides that the mass of the Athenian populace became familiar with the ideas of Xenophanes, they had, presumably, filtered through somewhat earlier to the higher intellectual strata. Diffused in much the same way were the ideas of Heraclitus and the Eleatics. challenging the validity of long-accepted traditional beliefs. Though no mention is made of a creation out of nothing this god, at first sight, seems to be quite unlike any conception of the Divine that was developed in Greek mythological or philosophical speculation; rather it reminds one of the Supreme All-knowing God, known to most primitive peoples.
