Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Back in print after over a decade: the playful and genre-shattering memoir of a beloved surrealist known for her gender-bending portraitureFirst published in 1930 by anti-fascist, avant-garde publisher Editions du Carrefour in Paris as Aveux non Avenus, Cancelled Confessions (or Disavowals)… is Claude Cahun's wildly radical answer to an invitation to write a memoir. Shattering the very premise of the "memoir"--the singularity of identity--into sharp and prismatic fragments, Cahun assembles an ever-mutating inquiry into the instability of "self" and its many masks.Using a multitude of forms (fables, jokes, aphorisms, letters, dialogues, dreams, hymns, pronouncements, etc.), to plumb the subjects of desire, love, gender, sex, fear, faith, religion and vanity (among others), Cancelled Confessions (or Disavowals) is a tour-de-force work of resistance: it provokes the reader to enter the capacious, provocative, playful and deeply imaginative space constructed by Cahun in defiance of all categorization, to repudiate a delimited, censured world and embrace, instead, the outcasts and cast-offs, the unknowable and the unknown.Thoughtfully redesigned to emulate the original artist's book, this revised edition of the out-of-print English translation by Susan de Muth--originally published in the UK by the Tate in 2007 and in the US by MIT Press in 2008--includes novelist and critic Pierre Mac Orlan's original 1930 preface along with contemporary essays by scholar Amelia Groom and translator de Muth. Almost 100 years old, Cancelled Confessions is not only prescient, but urgent: "It is not enough to be vanquished, you also have to turn defeat to your advantage."Born in France in 1894, Claude Cahun (nee Lucy Renee Mathilde Schwob) was a writer, artist and anti-fascist activist, associated with the Surrealists, yet who was obscure for decades. Cahun's shape-shifting, gender-bending, "self" portraits--made in collaboration with Marcel Moore (nee Suzanne Malherbe, aka l'autre moi, "the other me")--feature Cahun in androgynous garb with shaved head, or elaborately costumed and adorned with makeup or masks, often with mirrors or doubling, always multiplying the "I." These are the most recognizable works in a highly subversive, multiform oeuvre that includes Aveux non Avenus (Cancelled Confessions) as well as more untranslated writings. Now embraced as a pioneer of queer and feminist expression and heralded for a daring and inventive, years-long resistance to the Nazi occupation of the Isle of Jersey, Cahun created art--and a life--that aimed to disrupt societal, political and artistic orthodoxies with courage, wit and imagination. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability. Moore, Marcel (illustratore).

Softcover. Condizione: As New. Leichte Kratzer / Abnutzungen / Druckstellen.

Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Cancelled Confessions reveals Claude Cahun to be a major surrealist writer and pioneering queer theorist almost a century ahead of her time. The re-appearance of this glittering and dissenting semi-lost epic is a gift Cahuns writing is stylish, playful and prescient, peopled with angel slang…, flowering disavowals, Gods lipstick and an infinite layering of masks. Daisy Lafarge, author. In 1930, Claude Cahun (born Lucy Schwob) and her partner, artist Marcel Moore (born Suzanne Malherbe) published their surrealist masterpiece, Aveux non Avenus, translated here as Cancelled Confessions and available in English for the first time in twenty years.Susan de Muths revised translation of Cancelled Confessions has a new introduction by art historian Amelia Groom which contextualizes it within contemporary queer discourse. Its a surrealist, trans, queer, autofiction, (anti)memoir, and also none of those things. Its a text, and a life, felt as connection and at the same time completely singular. McKenzie Wark, author. The kaleidoscopic text is pieced together from diverse fragments there are philosophical and subversive theological musings, aphorisms and fables, letters and dialogues, dreams and hymns, nightmares and jokes, writes Groom. The books nine sections are prefaced by dreamlike photomontages (reproduced in high definition here) which reflect, illuminate and converse with the verbal content.Upon publication, Aveux non Avenus simply baffled all but a few of Cahuns friends and admirers, leading Cahun to describe herself as, An unwanted Cassandra. Now, however, is the time of the remarkably prescient Cahun and Moore.Cahun was a pioneer of gender-bending role-playingeerily ahead of her time she has attracted an almost cult-like following. The late David BowieCahun and Moores appeal is wide and universal. They were adventurers in life as in art. Cahun famously terrified Andre Breton in the 1920s when she appeared in a Paris cafe with her head shaved and painted gold. Having moved to Jersey in 1938, Cahun and Moore waged a mischievous two-person resistance campaign against the occupying Nazi forces from 1940. Finally caught and imprisoned in 1944, they were sentenced to death in 1945, saved at the very last moment by the armistice. Claude Cahun's collection of surrealist prose-poems, poem-essays in an arthouse volume with photomontage illustrations by the author and Marcel Moore Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.
