Hardcover. Condizione: Good. [2], viii, 600 pp. + 5 fold-out tables, folio, quarter brown leather, six raised bands, paste-paper sides; title page printed in red and black, decorative border surrounds the text on each page, uncut. Claude de Visdelou (1656-1737) was a French Jesuit who, as a missionary to China under Louis XIV, gained a deep knowledge of its language, literature and history. This work thus naturally covers China and, quite extensively, a history of Tartary, as well as material supplementary to Barthélemy d'Herbelot's 1697 landmark work of the same name. Indeed, Visdelou honors d'Herbelot with the latter's engraved frontispiece portrait. Originally issued as volume 4 to the 1777-79 quarto edition of d'Herbelot, this folio format was produced to perhaps sit side by side with the d'Herbelot 1697 folio, or to even be bound together. Included is a 46-page reprinting of Galand's collection of Oriental maxims (Les maxims des Orientaux) followed by an extensive index with cross references to the quarto and a later folio edition. (For an excellent discussion of d'Herbelot's Bibliotheque Orientale, see Alexander Bevilacqua: "How to Organise the Orient: d'Herbelot and the Bibliotheque Orientale," in Journal of the Warburg and Courtauld Institutes, vol. 79 [2016], pp. 213-261). With the bookplate of The Law Society and a Mendham Collection shelfmark. Interior generally very good, pages clean, edges a little dusty, a few small wormholes; edges of covers and spine worn, head and tail of leather spine chipped, with about a one-inch piece chipped off each end; hinges cracked with some chipping, but holding; paste-paper sides a little rubbed and age-toned. Overall, a good copy, the textblock very good, binding fair.

No Binding. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. Published by Jean P. Thoulez Editeur in Belgium in 197? Limited numbered edition of 50. Incredible 1970 s collection of six serigraphs by obscure Belgian artist Claude Galand, an amazing hybrid of Pop Art, Surrealism, and bande dessinee, with comic-monstrous insects and apocalyptic tableaux. The prints, all signed by the artist at bottom and with vivid colors, measure 14 by 10.5 , and are housed inside a printed thick paper folder. Bizarre and utterly commanding artwork by a wholly overlooked underground 70 s artist. The only other info I have on him is a self-published book from 1975 collecting eroto-comic Surrealist drawings, in the tradition of countryman Marcel Marien (OCLC shows only two holdings of this book, both in Europe). This portfolio is super rare and the prints are stunning and well-preserved, all separated by loose tissue guards. Light wear to the outer folder.
