Given Assyria's location in a region linking South Mesopotamia and Syro-Anatolia, Claudia Beuger's study on ceramics allows for a fresh debate and a new definition of the differences and similarities between the North and South Mesopotamian ceramic cultures, especially since more concentrated international fieldwork has now again become possible in northern Iraq. Beuger makes an important contribution to the research on the ceramics of the archaic Ishtar temples. German description: Die sogenannten Alteren Ischtar-Tempel gelten als der am besten dokumentierte Baukomplex in Assur, der Keimzelle des spateren assyrischen Reiches. Zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts wurden diese Befunde unter der Leitung von Walter Andrae bis auf den anstehenden Fels hinab ausgegraben und es konnten die vermutlich fruhesten erhaltenen Kultbauten der Stadt freigelegt werden. Nachdem die Architektur und die wichtigsten Funde von dem Ausgraber selbst bereits in den 1920er Jahren vorgelegt wurden, hat sich Jurgen Bar im Rahmen des gut 70 Jahre spater ins Leben gerufenen Assur-Projektes einer umfassenden Neubearbeitung der im Vorderasiatischen Museum zu Berlin einlagernden Dokumentation und Kleinfunde gewidmet. Zum gegenwartigen Zeitpunkt verfugt Assur als einziger Fundort uber eine vergleichsweise gut dokumentierte Keramiksequenz aus dem 3. bis 2. Jahrtausend v.Chr. Da Assur in einer Bruckenregion zwischen dem sudmesopotamischen und dem syro-anatolischen Raum liegt, erlaubt das von Claudia Beuger vorgestellte Material auch eine neue Diskussion und Definition der Grenzen und Gemeinsamkeiten der nord- und sudmesopotamischen Keramikkulturen, insbesondere da heute intensivierte Feldforschungen unter internationaler Beteiligung im Nordirak wieder moglich sind. Mit ihrer Untersuchung leistet Beuger so einen wichtigen Beitrag zur Erforschung der Keramik der Alteren Ischtar-Tempel in Assur.
