So entsteht ein erinnerungsträchtiges und unsentimentales Bild dieser Zeit. Man sieht die 50er gern im milden Licht von Tütenlampen und Heimatfilm. Doch trotz beginnendem Wirtschaftswunder war das Leben für viele Menschen alles andere als idyllisch. Der große Krieg lag erst ein paar Jahre zurück. Der Anblick von Kriegsversehrten, die zahllosen Trümmergrundstücke, das Leben in Behelfswohnungen, der Waschtag, das Klo im Hof, die 50-Stunden-Woche, wenn man denn Arbeit hatte, das alles war fester Bestandteil eines häufig noch sehr kargen Lebens. Idylle gab es wohl, aber die Leitwörter waren Pflicht, Leistung, Ordnung und Sauberkeit und im Osten natürlich der sozialistische Aufbau. Bloß nicht über die Vergangenheit nachdenken.
