Clausel's note, of eleven lines of a few words each, is in the left-hand margin, and recommends to 'la bienveillance de Mr. de Schonen' the petition of a woman who describes herself as 'une malheureuse veuve'. Laid down on the reverse is a piece of card, carrying a biographical note in English in an nineteenth-century hand.

Edition originale de cette auto-justification du général Bertrand Clauzel (1772-1842, on écrivait généralement Clausel à l'époque), pour sa conduite pendant les Cent-Jours : nommé inspecteur général de l'infanterie par Louis XVIII, il se rallia à Napoléon lors du retour de l'Ile d'Elbe et, nommé commandant du corps d'observation des Pyrénées, marcha sur Bordeaux et obligea la duchesse d'Angoulême à rembarquer. C'était beaucoup pour un seul homme, et il fut condamné à mort par contumace par le conseil de guerre de la 1ère division militaire (11 septembre 1816).
