Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book tells the story of Cassius M. Clay, a Kentucky Whig politician and newspaper editor, who was a vocal advocate for emancipation in the 1840s. The author recounts Clay's struggles to publish his pro-emancipation newspaper, the *True American*, in a state where slavery was deep…ly entrenched and resistance to abolitionism was fierce. The book delves into the turbulent political climate of the time, exploring the clash between those who sought to uphold the institution of slavery and those who championed the cause of freedom. The text vividly captures the intensity of the debate, highlighting the violence and intimidation used by pro-slavery factions to silence dissenting voices. Clayââ â¢s personal experiences, from his illness and subsequent attempts to defend his press from a mob to his ultimate forced cessation of publication, are recounted in harrowing detail. The author weaves a compelling narrative that exposes the hypocrisy and brutality of a society divided by the issue of slavery. Through Clay's impassioned pleas for justice and his unflinching defense of free speech, this book offers a powerful glimpse into the struggle for human rights in a deeply troubled era. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Complete, original disbound issue of Harper's Weekly published just prior to the Republican Convention in Chicago on May 16th that, of course, nominated Abraham Lincoln for his first term as President. This illustration is followed by brief biographies of ten of the eleven candidates (a biography of Cassius M. Clay is not included). Also included in this issue is a full-page panoramic view of Chicago. This copy is in near fine condition with some brief foxing. a short (2") closed tear on the front panel, and minor edgewear.
