Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. First edition. 310pp. Quarto [28.5 cm] Photographically illustrated paper over boards, with light shelfwear to the boards. Inscribed by Monte Holm on the front free endpaper: "To_____ / Your Friend / Monte Holm / 4/30/2002." From the Foreword- "The beauty behind survival of the fittest is that sometimes it produces a Monte Holm. "And the beauty in a life story told straight forward, unencumbered by rationalizations or embellishments, is that sometimes it becomes a story we feel in our hearts. "Monte's story is the Depression seen through the rough frame of an open boxcar door and beneath the starry expanse of the night sky over Montana sheep country. It starts small and simple and warm, and then is somehow spliced onto a larger, chilling documentary of a nation plunged into despair. It's as though someone, without artistic training, pointed a camera at those years and unintentionally caught not only the essence of the Grapes of Wrath, but those little windows into the human spirit.".…

Hardcover. Condizione: Very good. No dust jacket. Presumed First Edition, First printing. ix, [1], 310 pages. Oversized book (measuring 11-1/4 inches by 8-1/2 inches. Signed by the author on the front free endpaper--Your Friend, Monte Holm, 4/24/2006. Includes Dedication, Foreword, Introduction, Acknowledgments, Epilogue, Photographs. Monad "Monte" Holm, a former hobo who was kicked off trains during the Great Depression later became a successful businessman and owner of a train museum. After riding the rails, Mr. Holm became a scrap-metal dealer, City Council member and owner of the House of Poverty Museum, which showcased many antiques and his collection of train cars. Mr. Holm was one of the few remaining registered owners of a private rail line. His collection included a presidential dining car used by President Wilson and later President Truman, the last steam engine operated in Alaska and several cabooses. Monte Holm, who lived through the Depression, at age 13 had no home to go back to, and spent his time riding the rails. This is an intriguing story of his struggle to attain a victorious life. Mr. Holm founded Moses Lake Iron and Metal in the 1950s and Moses Lake Steel in the 1970s. He was elected to the City Council in this central Washington town in 1964 and served six years.
