Nato nel 1500 a Parigi, Convertitosi nel 1542 al calvinismo, poi al luteranesimo, fu da allora bersaglio dell'avversione dei calvinisti non meno che di quella dei cattolici. Esule in Germania, insegnò a Tubinga, poi a Strasburgo. Celebri le lezioni da lui più tardi tenute a Dôle. Reduce a Parigi nel 1557, riprendeva, con gli scritti, la lotta contro la Curia romana, combatteva in un famoso libro la recezione dei canoni del concilio di Trento, e cercava d'impedire la fondazione delle scuole dei gesuiti. Sul punto di morte (27 dicembre 1566) pronunciò una ritrattazione la cui spontaneità è variamente valutata" (Treccani).

Si parla anche dell'assassinio di Francesco Cenci, per il quale vennero condannati il figlio…Bernardo Cenci (che evitò la pena di morte) e Beatrice Cenci. "I Cenci erano un'antica famiglia del patriziato urbano, presente a Roma fin dal XIV secolo. Il loro complesso residenziale - chiamato Monte dei Cenci - è uno dei più importanti della città rinascimentale e barocca. Esso nel situato nel rione Regola, in una zona centrale dal punto di vista degli scambi commerciali" (Eleonora Canepari, Il Monte de' Cenci). "Le proprietà della famiglia Cenci furono confiscate dalla Camera Apostolica e vendute all'asta per 91 000 scudi, cifra assolutamente inferiore al loro valore reale. La maggior parte dei beni, tra i quali la grande tenuta di Torrenova, settemila ettari ed un castello nell'Agro Romano, fu acquistata da Gian Francesco Aldobrandini, nipote del papa. Il procedimento innescò una lunga serie di cause legali promosse dai superstiti della famiglia con parziali restituzioni di beni.".

Title page with engraved vignet and typographical border printed in blue + 44 pp + 1 leaf with lithographed ills. on both sides + 548 pp + lxxxviii (88) pp + (1)(errata) + 3 full page mezzotint plates. (complete but for 1 lithograph -tabu…la I (?) in the introductory leaves). The missal is entirely printed in red and black, in two columns, with numerous woodcut initials, all page with a double fillet border with corner ornaments.; many pages with printed scores of music ( red printed staves, 12 per column). Bound in contemporary half roan, boards covered with marbled paper, binding with some wear but still a very good copy with a near spotless interior. The missal was probably never used. It belonged to the library of the Belgian printing house Hanicq - (later) Dessain, which collected these missals as they were themselves publishers of missals and liturgical books for the Roman Catholic Church. (Identification via a small paper label on the spine with only a number ( nr. 714). In-folio missals in this condition are very rare. The book was in daily use during the celebration of the mass which resulted after a lapse of time in heavy wear.
