Trip 1, from Las Cruces to the Arizona state line via Interstate 10, approximately parallels the historic Butterfield Overland Mail route and provides a panorama of the southwest desert and distant mountains. Trip 2, from Deming to Lordsburg via the Mimbres Valley and Silver City, covers the transition between desert and mountains, and passes through an active mining district. Trip 2A visits Hurley, Bayard, and Central; and Trip 3, from Silver City to San Lorenzo via the Gila Cliff Dwellings, has been added to this edition, inviting the traveler to visit the cool, timbered Gila Wilderness-and illustrating the enchanting variety of landscapes in the region. Trip 4, from Deming to Columbus and the Mexican border, adds an international flavor to the tour. Included in the trip descriptions are historical vignettes printed in the distinct, smaller type by Paige Christiansen. Fully illustrated with tables, maps, diagrams, sketches, and photographs on almost every page.
