Hardcover. 1st edition. viii, [1], 286 p.; 22 cm. (Fernley-Hartley lecture ; 1943) (Methodist union catalog C4631) Contents -- Preface -- Introductory -- 1. Wesley's ideal Methodist and the reality -- 2. The homeless and their chapel-building -- 3. Their spiritual experience -- 4. Fellowship -- 5. Personal conduct -- Their family life and their children -- Epilogue and summary -- Bibliography [early memoirs and local histories] -- Index. -- "The most profligate of the people were reclaimed from turbulence and crime at a critical time. Their reclamation was sometimes sensational and crude in its processes. `At Heptonstol (sic!) I gave several exhortations,' writes Thomas Mitchell, travelling preacher, in 1746. `A very tall man who was a butcher, was cut to the heart. But it had a very bad effect upon him for the present. For he went home and beat his wife in a most terrible manner, because he thought she had told me of all his sinful ways. But afterwards he was convinced and converted.'" (p. 2 f.) -- "The crowds, indeed, were so great that it was decided to arrange the funeral itself at five a.m., and so, by the light of torches and lanterns, his body was laid to rest. That night Susanna Knapp finished a sampler she had lately begun. The words on the canvas were a panegyric on John Wesley, and the little lady from Worcester worked it with her own hair. It was a strange but personal memorial--and it was typical of similar happenings all over the country. The explanation does not lie in the fact of his dominating personality, but in the more important fact that he had led them to God." (p. 266) Good orig. navy cloth, front cover lightly spotted.
