When the 'morus multicaulis', a new form of mulberry tree, was introduc…ed into the United States in the eighteen-twenties, he was among the earliest and most enthusiastic experimenters. His success and enthusiasm convinced the state legislature of the practicability of silk production in Massachusetts and Cobb was commissioned to write the present manual, the first and most influential guide to American silk manufacture. Publication was subsidized by the government. The work was very popular and went through four editions by 1839. In 1837, Cobb established one of the earliest silk mills in the United States.
