This book offers a rare viewpoint through the candid letters of Randolph Gore Hampton, a Confederate Major whose spirited, and at times, zealous missives present a provocative and enlightening historical account of the American South in a post-war era. From Washington D.C., Hampton fights to recover war reparations and bemoans the erosion of Southern values. His frank, often humorous letters provide a window into Southern society, politics, race relations, and even dueling etiquette, challenging perceptions of the Old and New South. Hampton's journey provides a unique lens through which to understand the complex narratives of redemption, reconciliation, and the struggle to preserve Southern identity. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
